Adapting an existing showplay from scratch is always a daunting challenge and requires extraordinary people. To take on a project like this, two of Belgium’s most talented and skilled experts got to work. Mario Hofman and Hans Mertens formed an efficient duo as Mario created the lighting design and led the technical production while Hans translated Mario’s vision as programmer and operator.

For those who know the Zuiderkroon venue, it’s no surprise that staging a musical with a wide variation of scenes and settings is challenging by itself. There is little space to work with extensive set pieces so Mario Hofman came up with a different approach. To keep the momentum going throughout the complete show and get the maximum width on stage, he chose to use video screens. This way he could guide the spectators’ eye and take charge of the narrative and focus points, just like a magician would.

Once the approach was decided, the heavy lifting starts in terms of content creation, programming, creating intimacy while using video wall, working on the details, and so much more. One of the key elements that determines the eventual result is speed. The pace and efficiency with which you can convert your intentions to a programmed show.

“When we saw the release notes of 1.5 on MA3, we called each other and we agreed the time was right to run this production on the new platform.”

“Both Hans and myself have been pioneers in the past when it comes to taking new platforms to real life situations. Due to our experience and the open communication with FACE and MA Lighting it was a valuable experience to see the potential of MA3 on scene and not just play around at home. As we know these innovations are based on user feedback, we are happy to contribute by validating our feedback with hands-on experiences.” - Mario Hofman.

“Software is never finished, but the eventual goal is to be able to accomplish what you want, hassle free and since that’s the case, we are determined to continue on the MA3 platform. During programming and operating you very easily adapt to the logic workflow and position of the keys so I didn’t have to fight my muscle memory” Hans completes.

We were able to view the results and were amazed by the level of detail and the spot-on timing that elevate the musical to a top notch production. Cues are being follow by immediate applause and grandeur switches with intimacy with brilliant subtle transitions. We want to congratulate everybody involved in this production and of course our special thanks goes out to Mario Hofman and Hans Mertens for great  and insightful feedback.
