Ayrton lights up Brussels Flower Carpet: One square, 30 Cobras

To mark the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium, Japanese artist Hiro Sugiyama reimagined Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa in flowers. More than 700,000 flowers formed the design for the 24th edition of the Brussels Flower Carpet, covering 1,680 m² of the Grand-Place.

After dark, Artfex extended the experience beyond the flowers with a sound and light show set to music by Alexandre Dai Castaing. Lighting designer Geoffrey Oelbrandt used 30 Ayrton Cobra fixtures, supplied by Rent-All Europe, to connect the carpet, the surrounding façades and the sky above the square.

Working with the whole square

The Grand-Place shaped both the concept and the technical approach. Artfex wanted the lighting to extend the experience across the square while respecting its historic architecture.

“Our intention was not simply to illuminate the Flower Carpet but to extend the visual experience beyond the carpet itself and use the entire Grand-Place as part of the show,” explains Oelbrandt.

Positioned at ground level around the carpet, the Cobras projected across the square and upwards towards the façades and open sky. Working with 30 units allowed Oelbrandt to build compositions through symmetry, layers and movement, moving between quieter architectural sequences and broader aerial effects.

Beam definition over distance

The design called for beams that would remain clearly defined across the dimensions of the square. Cobra’s laser source, concentrated beam and output over distance informed the choice, alongside its movement speed and colour capabilities.

These characteristics gave Artfex room to vary the scale of the show while keeping individual beams distinct, whether sweeping over the flowers or reaching above the surrounding buildings.

Artfex’s ongoing partnership with Rent-All Europe allows the team to select equipment around the needs of each production. For the Flower Carpet, this meant a rig that could reach across the Grand-Place while keeping the floral installation at the centre of the show.
